Classroom Activities


These standards-based lesson plans provide classroom teachers with activities and related reading resources for building early math skills. Related at-home activities enable parents to reinforce the skills at home.

  • Be the Agent Activities - Odd Squad | PBS KIDS Lab

    Use skills such as sorting & classifying and deductive reasoning to help Odd Squad agents Olive and Otto make sense of odd happenings and restore order. Each activity takes about 60 minutes.

  • Build Me a House | PBS KIDS Lab

    This large and small group activity encourages students to use the processes of measurement to build houses for their favorite storybook characters. The students will be given the opportunity to plan, measure, and construct a house or houses to fit the size specifications of each character. Students will be able to display and talk about their newly constructed houses.

This unit has two class activities, videos, online games, and activities to extend the learning at home.

    This large and small group activity encourages students to count the letters in their names and in those of their classmates' using Unifix cubes and sticky notes. Children will use comparative language, sort names in different ways, and make a name graph.

  • Obstacle Course | PBS KIDS Lab

    This large and small group activity builds an understanding of spatial sense through the use of location and position words. Students will be invited to move through an obstacle course created by the teacher. Later the students can create their own obstacle courses in the block area.

  • Shape Hunt | PBS KIDS Lab

    This large and small group activity helps make students aware of basic shapes in their everyday environment and how these shapes make up objects in their surroundings. Students will hear a story and view shapes in its illustrations. Then, in small groups with the teacher, they will be invited to search for specific shapes in their classroom and school environment and tally how many of each they find. Students will be given the opportunity to tally independently, moving at their own pace. Then, with their group, they will count the total number of each type of shape they identified.

  • Shoe Sorting | PBS KIDS Lab

    This large or small group activity encourages students to observe carefully, analyze, and make comparisons and predictions based on data they gather. Students will sort shoes by different attributes, such as how they fasten, color, size, and type of shoe (i.e., sneaker, boot, sandal, etc.). They will then record their findings on a chart made from a shower curtain and count the shoes in each attribute category. Students will also collaborate with their peers to answer questions about their findings.

    In this lesson, designed for use with English Language Learners, students read an interactive story about different forms of transportation and then play a game to demonstrate how they work.

    Students read an interactive, informational text from Martha’s True Stories, and explore different jobs that require measuring and measuring tools.

    Students read an interactive, informational text that explores different forms of communication. Then they get in groups to plan a party using a different form of communication for the invitation.

    In this ELL lesson, students read an interactive recipe from Martha’s True Stories and then create their own recipe.

    Students read an interactive, informational text about how animals have inspired some of our most amazing inventions—from airplanes to swimsuits. They then create their own animal-inspired inventions.
